Texas Lions Camp
The Azle Lions Club has sent approximately 25 children to the Texas Lions Camp in Kerrville since our club received our charter. The Texas Lions Camp is a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing, without charge, a summer camp for children with physical disabilities, type 1 diabetes and cancer from the state of Texas regardless of race, religion or national origin.
The Camp is nestled on 504 beautiful acres in the Hill country. Modern facilities include a dining hall, infirmary, Olympic sized pool, fishing pond, rope course, gym, weight room, amphitheater, air conditioned cabins and more. Staff to camper ratio averages 1:2.
Children must be 7-16 years old to attend the camps for physically disabled children and 8-15 years old for the Diabetes camps.
The diabetic camp program provides children with an opportunity to learn and expand their self-care skills. In addition to the recreational programs offered in the other camps, diabetic campers participate in educational programs. A medical team joins the staff to help children learn about their condition. Each day campers monitor blood sugar, learn about nutritional choices and insulin procedures. Parents are offered a day of instruction at the end of each session.
The Camp promotes a "can do" attitude. Each child is encouraged to participate in every activity. Most children return from camp with an increased awareness of their abilities and the knowledge that they can complete many tasks that were previously never attempted.
Each summer the camp has several one week sessions from which to choose. The Azle Lions will assist campers with completion of the applications and mail them to the camp. All applications must be reviewed and sponsored by a Lions Club member prior to being sent to the camp.
